Sunday Blooms!

 Good morning Sunshines!

I hope everyone is having a lovely Sunday so far. I have a little bloom to share with you! My sweet roomie has gotten into daily nature observations with me, so I woke up to a text that a little flower had bloomed in our yard!

I think it's lovely that we've both begun to take more notice of our surroundings, and we've slowly begun to identify all the flora around our apartment. According to plantsnap, this little guy is a Gladiolus candidas, which is aparantely related to a type of lily. I thought that was interesting since "candidas" made me think of yeast, but I guess that's candida? I looked up the scientific name and actually found a chromosomal breakdown of the plant as well, which I found super interesting. I didn't realize horticulturists were semi-geneticists, but it makes a lot of sense with the amount of different plant hybrids we have! I thought this was a lovely little application of biology for my morning.

I hope you wake up refreshed on this beautiful Sunday and find some blooms in your day too!

  1. I really enjoy reading your blog! It always makes me smile. This weekend my brother and I went out to get bonsai trees. The biology and science behind them is incredible. Also just adorable to have on a desk haha.

  2. And I thought you weren't going to mention BioChem! Just kidding. But I love your scientific take on your outside surroundings. I love PlantSnap because I've been so ignorant of most plants my whole life, and now I can at least identify what I see. Thanks so much for observing what's around you, even if it takes you away from BioChem for a few moments.

  3. This looks a lot like a Trillium, which is Oregon's state flower. Have you ever watched a flower grow in a time lapse video? The growth and blooming process is extremely fun to watch when sped up.
