Hello Friends!

Hello and welcome to Pamela's Treks, your one-stop-shop for all of my outdoor adventures this fall!

When I first read the course description of Treks and Texts, I envisioned a semester kayaking, camping, and climbing, sprinkled with deep literary discussions amidst various natural settings. Suffice to say, the first class, spent with a laptop in my bedroom intermittently joining/leaving a zoom meeting according to the whims of my wifi, didn't exactly meet my expectations. My roommate did burst into my room after finding a tick on her back (courtesy of our sweet rescue puppy, Jack) midway through class, so I suppose that added a bit of a wilderness ambiance?

During these chaotic times, reality is seeming more and more like a science fiction novel, and expectations are being shattered right and left. Throughout the last few months, I've tried to adopt an attitude of flexibility and gratitude for things I previously took for granted, such as the continued health and wellbeing of my loved ones.

While my initial expectations for this course probably won't be met, I'm realizing that that's ok. I don't need to summit Everest or Machu Picchu to appreciate nature. Indoor quarantine has made any trek outside the house a relative adventure. I'm already enjoying connecting with my fellow adventurers via zoom and appreciating the snippets of sunshine in my week, whenever I find time to head out for a breath of fresh air. I'm looking forward to exploring Fort Worth's "outdoors" through this perspective shift, and I can't wait to see what I'll learn. Come along for the ride! (or the hike? walk?)

Whatever we decide to call the experience, please enjoy these texts about my treks!

  1. Thanks for this first post. I sincerely regret not being to hike, bike, and kayak with you and the other students. The outside excursions were the reason I created the course. But I fully intend to do everything I can to enhance everyone's experiences, both inside and outside.
